Po svém odchodu z Deep Purple založil zpěvák David Coverdale v roce 1978 rockovou formaci, která podobně jako Deep Purple vycházela z hard rocku, ale kladla větší důraz na líbivé melodie. V osmdesátych letech Whitesnake natočili několik desek, které se dostaly do britské Top 10, s eponymním albem z roku 1987 se dokázali prosadit i ve Spojenych státech.
